Carson, D. A. An Introduction to the New Testament Zondervan 1992 0-310-51940-3 / 9780310519409 Hardcover ABOUT THE BOOK An Introduction to the New Testament FROM THE PUBLISHER The primary focus of An Introduction to the New Testament is on what used to be called "special introduction" - that is, on historical questions dealing with authorship, date, sources, purpose, destination, and so forth. Several recent books devote more than this one does to literary form, rhetorical criticism, and historical parallels. The authors do not minimize the importance of such topics, and they have introduced them where they directly bear on the subject at hand. But they feel that these topics are better given extended treatment in courses on exegesis, especially the exegesis of particular books. There has been too much focus on these topics at the expense of traditional questions of "introduction," and this has tended to divorce the New Testament books from their historical settings. Although the emphasis in this book is on "special introduction," the authors have included a brief outline of each New Testament document, sometimes providing a rationale for the choices they have made. In each case they have provided a brief account of current studies on the book, and indicated something of the theological contribution that each New Testament document makes to the canon. Their ultimate concern is that new generations of students will gain a better grasp of the Word of God. SYNOPSIS This is a New Testament introduction that pursues historical questions dealing with authorship, date, sources, purpose, destination, etc., in all books of the New Testament, and gives an outline of each book with bibliographies of current studies. Carson, D. A. Cross and Christian Ministry: Leadership Lessons from I Corinthians Baker Publishing Group 2004 0-8010-9168-3 / 9780801091681 Paperback ABOUT THE BOOK Cross and Christian Ministry: Leadership Lessons from I Corinthians FROM THE PUBLISHER Today we commonly see images of the cross adorning churches, dangling from necklaces, and gleaming from lapels. Yet the image that is so sanitized for us today was grotesque and abhorrent to those living in the first century. It was a symbol of evil, torture, and shame. It is this realistic and horrifying view of the cross that should call us to Christian ministry and compel us to share the Good News of Christ's triumph over death. Through his exposition of 1 Corinthians, D. A. Carson presents a comprehensive view of what the death of Christ means in preaching and ministering to God's people. He confronts the issues of factionalism, servant-leadership, shaping "world" Christians, and the source of knowledge in order to help Christian leaders learn principles for dynamic, cross-centered worship. Carson, D. A. How Long, O Lord?: Reflections of Suffering and Evil Baker Publishing Group 1991 0-8010-2556-7 / 9780801025563 Paperback ABOUT THE BOOK How Long, O Lord?: Reflections of Suffering and Evil FROM THE PUBLISHER Primarily, this is a book of preventative medicine. One of the major causes of devastating grief and confusion among Christians is that our expectations are false. We do not give the subject of evil and suffering the thought it deserves until we ourselves are confronted with tragedy. If by that point our beliefs--not well thought out but deeply ingrained--are largely out of step with the God who has disclosed himself in the Bible and supremely in Jesus, then the pain from the personal tragedy may be multiplied many times over as we begin to question the very foundations of our faith.
