3 Pierce, Chonda I Can See Myself in His Eyeballs
Zondervan 2001 0-310-23526-X / 9780310235262 Paperback
ABOUT THE BOOK I Can See Myself in His Eyeballs FROM THE PUBLISHER What would it be like to get so close to God that we could see ourselves in His eyeballs? What if we could see our images reflected there because we were so close to him? Chonda Pierce wants to get close enough to God to see herself as God sees her. But to move closer to God, we first have to see him. In this audio book, Chonda, with her usual southern humor, tries to open her own eyes and the eyes of the listener wide enough to see God. Where is God when her husband gets a speeding ticket, when her daughter wrecks her grandfather's truck, when there's a tragic plane crash, or when she's driving down the road in a Chevette held together by wire hangers? Come along and laugh along with Chonda as she tries to catch God at work in the most unlikely places. Author Biography: Chonda Pierce is a speaker, comedian, author, singer, preacher's daughter, wife, and mother of two. She is author of two adult books and a children's book, Tales from the Ark, co-written with her husband, David. Chonda lives in Nashville, TN, with her husband and two children. SYNOPSIS What would it be like to get so close to God that we could see ourselves in God's eyeballs? In this audio book, Chonda, with her usual southern humor, tries to open her own eyes and the eyes of the listener wide enough to see God in the most unlikely places. FROM THE CRITICS Publishers Weekly Is it possible to see ourselves, our hardships and our heartaches in the light of God's sovereign love? Author and comedienne Pierce (It's Always Darkest Before the Fun Comes Up and Chonda Pierce on Her Soapbox) finds novel ways to ask these questions as she shares the humorous foibles of life. Although Pierce's extensive travel schedule flavors her comedic repertoire with the exotic and the sensational, it's her hometown, small-church spin on life's happenings that brings home the spiritual relevancy. Among Pierce's 29 short drawn-from-life stories, the best pieces both for comedic value and their spiritual lessons are those involving her mother. At one of Pierce's speaking engagements in Buffalo, N.Y., "Momma" livened up the crowd by innocently complimenting the audience on their gorgeous city. But, Momma continued, Buffalo natives had become so used to weather extremes that they had long ago lost all dread of hell. Pierce lives and breathes to see everyday experiences through the perspective God intends. Using her finely tuned sense of humor, she exercises perceptive discretion as she describes the spiritual struggles faced by young and old. Pierce's tales of woe always end with a joyful exclamation of God's triumphant provision, transcendent of time and circumstance. Her many fans will enjoy this quirky balance of faith and fun. (Apr.) ABOUT THE BOOK It's Always Darkest before the Fun Comes Up FROM THE PUBLISHER Life might be no joke right now -- but laughter is on the way. There are two kinds of laughter. One is hollow hilarity that masks pain far too deep for words. The other is a full, joyous laugh that sounds triumphantly on the far side of life's dark passages. 6 Pierce, Chonda Tales from the Manger
Zondervan 2004 0-310-70849-4 / 9780310708490 Paperback
ABOUT THE BOOK Tales from the Manger ANNOTATION A collection of animals is unhappy when a man with a lamp enters their stable one night with his wife, but when her baby is born they realize they are looking upon the son of God, who made them all. FROM THE PUBLISHER An imaginative story of the stable animals who witnessed Jesus' birth--for ages 4-8 Following the tradition of Tales from the Ark, this is the story of the animals that surrounded the manger on the night of Jesus' birth. Each animal has a unique personality: the old bully bull Saul, Mary and Martha mouse, Peter the not-so-baaaad sheep, Thomas the rooster, Zachariah the opossum, and Mary Magdalene the scaredy cat. When shepherds show up to see the new baby, the little stable gets crowded and the animals know Someone special has just been born. David Pierce has had over twelve short stories published in mystery magazines. He's also written two novels to be published soon and co-written a children's book, Tales from the Ark, with his wife, Chonda. When he's not writing, he's teaching writing or fishing. FROM THE CRITICS School Library Journal PreS-Gr 1-In a series of short chapters, farm animals with personality or behavioral problems (a rooster who stubbornly refuses to crow, a terrified cat) find themselves transformed for the better by the birth of Baby Jesus in their stable. The small, square shape; the glowing, energetic paintings; and the well-spaced lines of text make this an attractive book. However, the stories themselves are somewhat long-winded and dull despite some attempts at humor, and both the animals' problems and their sudden conversions are unconvincing. This book may work in a Sunday school or parochial-school setting, but otherwise it's an unnecessary purchase.-E. M. Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
